Ocean color images from the Patagonia shelf break in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean usually exhibit high phytoplankton biomass during spring and summer periods, associated with a front between shelf subantartic platform waters and the Malvinas Current. After nutrient depletion from the diatom-dominated spring bloom, a coccolithophore bloom begins in November, anticipating moderated chlorophyll-a values in the ending summer. In this work, the timing and duration of blooms were analyzed using time series of chlorophyll-a and calcite (a proxy for coccolithophore blooms), derived from remote sensing data (MODIS/Aqua). These analyses reflected the temporal variation of chlorophyll-a concentration, consistent with phytoplankton abundance and identification from several cruises conducted in the region. Specifically, the image analyses of calcite concentration allowed detection of an important temporal and spatial pattern in the development of coccolithophore blooms over the Patagonia shelf and slope region. The latitudinal variation of the bloom intensity and its development indicates a relation to hydrographic conditions and nutrient input from upwelling at the shelf-break front and advection from the Malvinas Current. The development of more accurate bio-optical algorithms to derive the concentration of variables associated with blooms (primarily chlorophyll-a, calcite, and other products not evaluated here) will allow the continuous monitoring of features in the region through remote sensing.
